This easy blueberry sauce recipe is made with only blueberries (fresh or frozen), sugar, lemon juice, and cornstarch. It’s thick, sweet and the perfect topping for cheesecake, waffles, ice cream, oatmeal and so much more!

If you don’t like blueberries, other types of berries will work just as great, like my Fresh Strawberry Sauce.

This homemade blueberry sauce is great because is super easy to prepare, the lemon juice gives it a nice perk to the sweetnessand it’s also bursting with flavor and delicious, juicy blueberries.

Ingredients in Blueberry Sauce

To make this fresh blueberry sauce, you’ll need the following pantry staples:

  • Blueberries
  • Water
  • Granulated sugar
  • Lemon juice
  • Cornstarch

How to Make Blueberry Sauce

Homemade blueberry sauce is a breeze to make! Here are the basic steps:

  1. Gather the blueberries, sugar, water, and lemon juice and combine them into a medium pot.
  2. Bring the pot to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally until the blueberries start to burst.
  3. Then stir in the cornstarch mixed with cold water and continue to simmer for a further 4-6 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool. Serve immediately or keep in glass jars in the refrigerator.

Can you freeze Blueberry Sauce?

Definitely! If you freeze the sauce, I suggest thawing it overnight in the refrigerator and then warming it up in a saucepan until it’s nice and smooth.

Ways to Use Blueberry Sauce

Once it cools down, you can use this blueberry sauce for ice cream, pancakes, waffles, and much more. Here are some delicious ways to use this blueberry sauce:

  • On top of waffles, pancakes, andfrench toast.
  • Spooned over ice cream.
  • As a topping for cheesecakes.
  • Stirred into some greek yogurt or cottage cheese.
  • For a delicious breakfast, top your toast, as well as your oatmeal with a spoonful of this sauce.
  • Also, you can add a couple of spoonfuls on top of some freshly baked muffins or a piece of cake.

Tips for Making Homemade Blueberry Sauce

  • If you don’t have fresh blueberries,frozen ones will work just as great. If you’re using frozen blueberries, there’s no need to thaw them first.
  • The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools down, and especially after it has been refrigerated.
  • You can store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator where it can last for up to five days.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups blueberries, (fresh or frozen)
  • cup water
  • cup granulated sugar
  • 3 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 ½ tablespoons cornstarch + 1½ tablespoons cold water

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, add blueberries, water, sugar, and lemon juice and stir to combine. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

  • Lower heat and simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, for about 6-8 minutes, or until blueberries start to burst.

  • In a small bowl or cup, stir cornstarch and cold water until smooth. Stir into blueberry sauce and continue to simmer for 4-6 minutes, or until thickened. Sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.

  • Remove from heat and pour into a glass jar or container. Once sauce comes to room temperature, cover and store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Notes

  • Blueberry sauce will last for up to 5 days.
